Alan’s adventures go far beyond his three expeditions to Mount Everest . In his lifetime, he has also:
- Climbed the tallest peaks in North and
South America – Alaska’s Mt. McKinley (20,320 feet) and Argentina’s Mt.
Aconcagua (22,834 feet)
- Ascended four other high altitude peaks worldwide over 17,000 feet in Mexico and the Andes
- Run two 26.2 mile marathons
- Flown over 40 miles for over four hours high over the Canadian Rocky Mountains in his hang glider
- Kayaked Class IV white water
- Rafted Class V white water
- Completed some of the most challenging ice climbing routes in North America
- Made ascents of some of the classic alpine mountaineering routes in the Canadian Rockies
- Rock climbed throughout North America
- Made night scuba dives in the frigid waters of the North Atlantic
- Made day scuba dives beneath the ice of frozen mountain lakes in the dead of the Canadian winter
- Mountain biked some of the steepest, longest and most technically challenging single track trails in Canada
- Parachuted from 5,000 feet multiple times
- Raced down frozen Olympic tracks in a luge and bobsleigh at speeds of up to 55 mph
- Swam up to six hours at a time in near-freezing water as a long distance open water swimmer
- Been a member of 6 U.S. national championship-winning gymnastics teams
- Achieved “All-American” status as a gymnast 9 times
- Survived cancer of the blood after being given less than a year to live (what he considers to be his greatest adventure and achievement to date)
- Become one of less than a dozen people ever to achieve an elite level of fitness after a blood transplant for acute leukemia and regained 100 percent of the fitness he had prior to his last Everest expedition
- Been cancer-free for more than five years and is now considered medically cured
