Success is 97 percent preparation and 3 percent execution.
A 5-Step Preparatory Process
To prepare for each presentation, Alan goes through an exhaustive 5-step preparatory process:
- Step 1: Alan studies his client’s website(s) & takes detailed notes
- Step 2: He conducts at least one 60-90-minute telephone interview with senior leaders to discover the unique challenges facing each organization & group. Again, he takes extensive notes
- Step 3: He synthesizes the results of Step 1 & 2 into one page & before arriving on-site reviews this with each client to ensure the 100% accuracy of his information
- Step 4: Whenever possible he arrives two days before his presentation & attends sessions on-site to gather even more up-to-the-minute information about the group
- Step 5: He commits the information he has gathered to memory & smoothly, accurately & flawlessly integrates it into each personalized presentation in perfect context – not just at the beginning but throughout the entire presentation from start to finish
This preparatory process is unparalleled by any other speaker and has earned Alan the distinctive title of “The Best Adventure Speaker in the World.” He lives up to this title and proves it during every presentation. Here are some messages from our clients:
The way you tied your message into State Farm was outstanding. It wasn’t a speech that could be delivered anywhere to any group. You really tailored it to us. It’s a powerful story that made a powerful connection to us – exciting, refreshing, a hit.
—George Holton, VP, State Farm, NE Zone, Chadds Ford, PA
Your presentation was outstanding and the feedback we received from our leaders was overwhelming! Your ability to link our challenges and organizational priorities to “your story” was most impressive and had a tremendous impact on our leadership team. It was truly a home run!
—Laura Bochenek Klein, Director, Brand Communication, Memorial Hermann
Alan did an awesome job. I believe everyone loved the correlation between his Everest adventure and how the lessons learned on that mountain can be applied in everyday life. They were also very impressed by how be built his presentation around our business, and made that correlation as well. He had us laughing and crying at different times. Many people stayed after the presentation to get his book signed, even though some had a 4-5 hour drive ahead of them, so they definitely loved it.

In my 18 years with Melaleuca we have had the pleasure of hearing from some of the best in the speaking business. The list is a “who’s who” that includes Colin Powell, Les Brown, Lou Holtz and Rudy Giuliani. Of all those presenters, none have come close to understanding our business model, our products and our culture as you did. As inspiring as your personal story is, and as impressive as your stage presence and delivery was, I was most impressed with your attention to the smallest details about our company. Your research and preparation definitely paid off and it showed — in spades!
—Phil Crescenzo, Executive Director, Melaleuca, Inc, Buena, NJ
Thank you for your unbelievable attention to detail and for giving so much of yourself at our annual meeting of CEOs. We received numerous unsolicited compliments and you achieved this in a very difficult late afternoon time segment. For as long as you have been speaking — 20 years, I’ve been coordinating our annual meeting. I’ve hired many speakers over the years from all backgrounds and expertise. I’ve never had the pleasure of working with a speaker that was so willing to be accessible and genuine in his desire to learn about the audience and the purpose for which they are meeting. Then, you incorporated that information seamlessly into your presentation. Most paid speakers want just a few sound bites for their stock presentation and they come with lots of riders, do their thing, collect their money and are gone. Your approach to speaking is refreshing and it mirrors your climb of Everest – research in advance, the training and learning phase, acclimation to the environment (audience), then the climb, and finally the safe return from the summit before embarking on the next challenge. As you say, it’s ‘97% preparation and the rest execution.’ You very definitely walk your talk.
